Pleurodesis

 

 

 

 

Explain procedure – can be extremely painful / possibility of fever

Ensure full lung re-expansion – CXR / USS

Consider pre-medication

Strict aseptic precautions

Intrapleural lignocaine (3mg/kg) – approx. 20 mls of 1% lignocaine for a 70 kg patient – wait 10 mins

Mix 4 g sterile talc with saline to make up 50 mls and instill via drain

Clamp tube for 1 – 2 hours

Remove drain within 24 – 48 hours
